No Natal,o policial nova-iorquino John McClane(Bruce Willis) vai visitar a ex-mulher, Holly em Los Angeles.Lá,vai pra uma festa em seu local de trabalho,a Nakatomi Plaza,uma gigantesca multinacional.Mas quando ele está lá, terroristas europeus liderados por Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) seqüestra o prédio pretendendo roubar US$600.000.000,00 em ações. Só McClane pode combater os terroristas.
Curiosidade: O prédio onde se passa a história é real e se chama Fox Plaza, sede dos estúdios Fox em Century City, Los Angeles. Na época os produtores procuravam um local para as filmagens e o prédio, que ainda estava em construção, como no filme, foi considerado ideal para a história.
